Who Cares For Your Health? The Shocking Truth About Our "Healthcare System"; (Part 1)
Once upon a time...
During my childhood years, there was a neighborhood doctor named Dr. Haimof. As a child, I remember him as a frowning, impatient, even somewhat scary old man. His thick, white eyebrows and tight lip-less mouth gave him a constant angry look. His voice was gravely low and barely audible, which didn't add to the already tense atmosphere.
Yet, when the need arose, even at the age of 80, Dr. Haimof would leave his house and slowly walk by foot, all bent and fragile, even in the very late hours of the night, even during cold, windy and rainy winter weather. Carrying a large, heavy, black leather briefcase, he would visit the homes of the sick, offering comfort to both patients and their families. He provided medications from his briefcase along with prescriptions for the upcoming days. Remarkably, he personally knew and remembered all the neighborhood residents. This remained etched in me as a vivid and powerful childhood memory.
...and Today.
These days if you require medical assistance, you will primarily be a numbered entity in a computerized system, at the mercy of economic and bureaucratic decisions made by the establishment. Your overly busy doctor will stare at the screen long before actually looking at you (unfortunately, some may not even do that).
Healthcare systems Vs. Sickness systems.
Most people are pre-programmed to blend into society and conduct themselves according to social though and perception guidelines. It is highly comfortable for society when people conform and adhere to social rules and don't "cause problems". There are various sectors of society for whom it is very convenient when people are obedient and comply with the rules. It helps them make money - *Lots* of money.
One of the main areas where this phenomenon comes into play is the arena of healthcare (or should I say, "healthcare").
Many aren't aware that the so-called healthcare systems are actually sickness systems. It is so ingrained in our society, that only a few realize this. It has become the standard social norm for decades.
To illustrate, try conducting a Google image search for the word "health," and you'll likely find that a substantial portion of the pictures depict items associated with sickness rather than health.
I once heard an unverified story about village doctors in China. Allegedly, they receive higher salaries when they see fewer patients, indicating a healthier community. While I haven't confirmed this story, given the traditional Chinese approach, it seems plausible. In Western societies, the situation is exactly the opposite.
It is an unpleasant truth, but far too many people profit from various aspects of illness, to the extent that they literally promote sickness in many hidden (or even exposed) ways. This is an insanely massive industry flowing with unimaginable sums of money.
For instance, consider the United States with a population of approximately 340 Million people (in 2024).
In 2017, around 36 Million were hospitalized. This means, they experienced a medical condition severe enough to require a significant intervention. On average, one out of ten U.S. citizens experienced hospitalization during that year! Just imagine how many people were severely ill without undergoing hospitalization.
The total direct expenses on hospitalizations exceeded $1,000,000,000,000 (Yes, that's 1 Trillion!), with an average cost of $30,000 per person! That's more than half of the average annual income in the USA for that year. We can't even measure the extent of indirect damage inflicted with every hospitalization on family members, businesses and the national economy.
Today, the healthcare system expenditures constitute a sixth(!!!) of the entire American economy.
Here's yet another insane data point: Approximately 10% of the entire US workforce, on average, is affected by employment in hospitals.
Considering that besides direct medical and sanitary care needs, almost every hospital incorporates a large mall, an often expensive parking lot, hotels, social care systems for patients and their families, numerous information systems, and more, this information becomes more understandable.
As if that weren't enough, here is some shocking data regarding U.S. healthcare services. As of January 2024, the fourth(!) cause of mortality, with a staggering number of 225,000 people per year (following heart disease 695.5k, cancer 606k and COVID-19 417k) - is medical errors! This information, officially provided by the CDC, is highly debated, with some claiming much higher numbers. However, the numbers are already alarmingly high regardless.
Consider, for instance, the percentage of unnecessary surgeries:
Heart surgery & Stents | 12% |
Back Surgery | 17% |
Heart Pacers | 22% |
Knee Replacement | 38% |
Hysterectomy | 70% (!!!) |
Cesarean Section | No exact number published, but way above the required, even in low-risk pregnancies. |
True to 2010 alone, the estimated cost of unnecessary medical treatments (medications, examinations, radiation and more) is $210 Billion. For comparison, the US budget for the global war on hunger stands today at $56 billion. Imagine how many hungry mouths one could feed with all that wasted money.
You might assume that today's advanced technology and medicine will lead to a significant improvement in health and lifespan. You're in for a big surprise. The annual death rate in the USA today is on average nearly identical to that in the late 1950's to early 1960's and the trend is on the rise. The United Nations forecasts that 30 years from now, this number will rise by over 20%.
In light of this information, can we say that the USA is healthy? I definitely think NOT. Moreover, this situation is mirrored (albeit only slightly differently) throughout the entire modernized world.
In this post I barely scratched the surface of the problem. Over the next few posts, we'll delve even deeper into the situation.
Awareness is step number one in realizing what is the true situation of what is called our "healthcare" system and in understanding that you, and ONLY YOU, are responsible for your own true health and well-being.
From now on, even when you consult with your doctor - DARE TO BE YOU!!!
